Recruited from Thorpdale in Gippsland, Jim Forsyth was a ruckman who joined Essendon during the powerful John Coleman coaching era. Standing 191cm, he showed significant promise by winning the reserves best and fairest in 1964, but found it difficult to cement a permanent spot in a senior lineup anchored by established stars like Don McKenzie. His momentum was further stalled by a severe leg injury that wiped out most of his 1965 campaign, denying him any chance to participate in the Bombers' premiership success that year. Seeking regular senior opportunities, he transferred to West Torrens in the SANFL in 1968 alongside teammate John Birt, where he performed well enough to earn a state guernsey for South Australia. He eventually returned to country Victoria to captain-coach Drouin and Trafalgar, though his sporting legacy continued through his son, Tim Forsyth, who won a bronze medal in the high jump at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.
