Stats
Bio
Recruited from the bayside suburb of Chelsea, Jim Gutterson was a reliable full-back who found himself on the fringe of senior selection at the Western Oval during the early 1960s. While his opportunities at the top level were limited to a handful of appearances, he established himself as a dominant force in the lower grades, marshalling the defence with poise and consistency. His individual quality was formally recognised when he won the 1962 Gardiner Medal as the best and fairest player in the VFL reserves, proving he was a cut above the standard of the seconds. Unable to cement a permanent spot in the seniors, he eventually departed for the VFA, where he enjoyed a sustained career with Moorabbin, Brighton-Caulfield, and Prahran.
