Recruited from Elsternwick, Jim Illingworth was a tall prospect who earned a brief trial with St Kilda during the club's difficult 1924 wooden spoon campaign. Standing 182cm—a significant height for the era—he possessed the physical attributes to play as a key position utility or follower and was granted an opportunity in the senior lineup late in the season as the Saints looked to blood new talent. Illingworth made his debut in the penultimate round against Fitzroy and retained his place for the final match of the year against the eventual premiers, Essendon. Despite this late-season audition, he was unable to secure a permanent spot on the list for 1925, leaving the league with just two senior appearances to his name.
