Bio
Known as the "Sideway Rabbit" for his elusive pace and running style, Jim Karthaus was a lively wingman who fought for opportunities during one of Richmond's strongest eras. A local recruit from Richmond United, he was a foundational member of the club's reserves team—originally dubbed the "Cubs"—and broke into the seniors late in the 1920 season. While the depth of the Tigers' back-to-back premiership squads limited his ability to cement a permanent place in the starting 22, Karthaus demonstrated his genuine class in 1922, playing regular senior football and performing well enough to earn selection for Victoria. After leaving Punt Road in 1924, he enjoyed a long tenure in the VFA and suburban leagues, captain-coaching Kew, Burwood, and Deepdene.
