Bio
A stoutly built utility from the Port Melbourne strongholds, Jim MacBeth carved out a fragmented but resilient VFL career interrupted by global conflict. After initially cutting his teeth with Carlton's reserves and earning VFA representative honours with the Borough, he was recruited to Richmond in 1938 for a brief stint before returning to his VFA roots. His second opportunity at the elite level arrived under the shadow of the Second World War; with the VFA in recess and VFL lists decimated by enlistments, MacBeth joined St Kilda in 1942 while balancing service in the RAAF. Standing only 170cm but weighing over 80kg, he was a brick-wall figure through the centre line and defence, using his nuggety frame to win contested ball against taller opponents. Though his senior tenure ended in 1944, he remained a key depth player for the Saints during the war years, notably featuring in their 1942 reserves premiership side.
