Bio
Nicknamed "Charlie," Jim Mackie was a Port Melbourne wharfie plucked from local side Port Melbourne Railway United to play for the Fuschias in the 1913 season. Standing just 168cm, he immediately found a place on the wing, where he played five consecutive matches and impressed observers with his quality despite his lack of top-level experience. His promising VFL career was abruptly cut short in Round 12 against Carlton when he suffered a broken collarbone, an injury that ended his time in the red and blue. Mackie recovered to play two seasons with Port Melbourne in the VFA before enlisting in the AIF during World War I, where he was tragically killed in action at Bapaume, France, in 1917.
