Bio
Jim McColl was a key defender whose VFL career was fragmented by academic commitments and bad luck with injury. Recruited from Geelong College, he took a circuitous route to the senior side via University Blacks and Dookie Agricultural College, establishing himself as a tall, capable backman. His momentum was halted by a severe ankle injury sustained in a training mishap, which restricted him to just a handful of senior opportunities despite his dominance in the seconds, where he finished third in the league's Gardiner Medal and won Essendon's Reserves Best and Fairest. After moving between the Bombers and the Goulburn Valley, he eventually became a respected captain-coach in country football and later achieved national distinction as an agricultural scientist.
