Bio
Hailing from Wyndham Vale, Jim McDonald was a mature-age recruit who made his debut for Essendon at the relatively late age of 26. A defensive-minded player who rarely hit the scoreboard, he served primarily as a reliable depth option during a period where the club—then known as the "Same Olds"—remained a consistent finals contender. Although he struggled to lock down a permanent spot in the senior 22, McDonald earned the trust of selectors in crucial moments, most notably featuring in the heartbreaking three-point Semi Final loss to Carlton in 1904. He spent four seasons at the East Melbourne Cricket Ground, drifting in and out of the side before his League career concluded in 1906.
