Arriving at Melbourne with a decorated schoolboy background, James McLean was a two-time premiership player with Scotch College who spent time in the country with Euroa before his VFL call-up. He played his best football immediately upon arrival, operating as a follower and featuring in the bulk of the Redlegs' 1901 campaign where he booted all five of his career goals. Opportunities dried up after his debut season, however, and after managing just two senior appearances in 1903, he left the Victorian league permanently to join Sydney side North Shore the following year.
