James "Jigger" Morehouse was a definitive journeyman of the colonial era whose career spanned multiple colonies and competitions before his brief VFL cameo. A ruckman by trade, Morehouse began his path in the VFA alongside his brother Artie, representing Prahran before transferring to St Kilda in 1888 when the Saints absorbed his original club. His footballing odyssey continued with stints at Richmond and Carlton in the VFA, followed by a move to Western Australia where he turned out for the Fremantle club in the mid-1890s. He eventually returned to Melbourne and rejoined St Kilda for the 1898 VFL season, arriving as a 34-year-old veteran to bolster a struggling squad. Despite his vast experience across two states, Morehouse could not lift the Saints off the bottom of the ladder in his 10 appearances, retiring after a winless season that capped off a long and varied tenure in the game.
