Bio
Born in the goldfields town of Bealiba, Jim Oakes made his name in the outer eastern suburbs as a dominant figure for Springvale in the Berwick District League. A three-time best and fairest winner and captain at the local level, he served a solid apprenticeship in the Hawthorn reserves during 1935 before earning his senior opportunity late in the 1936 season. Oakes held his spot for the final four games of the year, booting his lone VFL goal against South Melbourne, but the mid-sized utility was unable to secure a permanent place at Glenferrie Oval. He ultimately returned to Springvale the following season, where he resumed his status as a premier player in the district competition.
