Recruited from the amateur ranks at Old Xaverians, Jim O'Brien was a goal-kicking rover who established himself as a regular fixture in the St Kilda side of the late 1950s. Standing 177cm, he was a smaller utility player who rotated through the forward line with impressive efficiency, famously concluding his VFL career with a perfectly symmetrical record of 75 goals from 75 games. O'Brien's tenure at Moorabbin was marked by his ability to balance elite football with demanding off-field commitments, as he completed a law degree while playing senior football. Although he retired three seasons prior to the club's celebrated 1966 premiership to focus on his legal career, he remained a servicable contributor who helped build the competitive standards at St Kilda during the lean years before their rise.
