Bio
Recruited from Noble Park-Harrisfield in the club's metropolitan zone, Jim O'Dea was a durable defender who held down a spot in St Kilda's backline for over a decade. Predominantly playing across the half-back flank, he was known for his rugged approach and physical style of checking opponents. While not a high-possession winner, his longevity was a testament to his reliability, playing 167 games across 14 seasons and serving as a constant presence in the Saints' defence during the 1970s.
O'Dea's career is often defined by a controversial incident in 1972 involving Collingwood star John Greening, which resulted in a 10-week suspension and left Greening with severe injuries. Despite the external infamy surrounding that event, O'Dea remained a respected figure within St Kilda, continuing to play until 1980. His commitment to the club extended well beyond his playing days, as he went on to coach the Under-19s and reserves sides and later served as a board member, cementing his status as a lifelong servant of the Saints.
