Bio
Born in Quarry Hill, Jim Opie holds the distinction of making his VFL debut as a 16-year-old, one of the youngest players to appear in the league's foundation years. Recruited from Melbourne University, he managed just a single appearance for St Kilda in 1899 before spending two seasons out of the senior ranks. Opie resurfaced at Carlton in 1902, where he found a role as a defender during the club's aggressive rebuilding phase under coach Jack Worrall. He played 27 games over four seasons as the Blues climbed from the bottom of the ladder to finals contention, often serving as a reliable depth player in the backline. Despite his contribution to the team's rise, Opie left Princes Park at the end of 1905, narrowly missing out on the club's historic hat-trick of premierships that began the following year.
