Bio
Born in Maryborough, Jim Oppy hailed from a distinguished footballing clan, being the older brother of Richmond premiership defender Max Oppy and a cousin of Essendon triple Brownlow Medallist Dick Reynolds. After cutting his teeth in the country leagues with Campbell's Creek and Castlemaine, he initially spent time training with Richmond during the war-interrupted seasons of the early 1940s but was unable to secure a senior game at Punt Road. His VFL opportunity finally arrived when he was recruited by Melbourne, making his debut in the final year of the Second World War. Oppy made three senior appearances for the Demons during the 1945 season, a brief stint that nevertheless cemented his place within a significant Victorian footballing dynasty.
