Bio
Born in North Melbourne, James "Jim" Pender was a member of a prominent early footballing dynasty, joining brothers Mick, Dan, and Laurie as one of four siblings to play at the highest level. After cutting his teeth with Wellington in the Geelong district and making a brief VFA appearance for the Pivotonians, Pender arrived at Princes Park for the 1898 season. He proved to be a durable and consistent performer for the struggling Blues, missing just a single match during his solitary VFL campaign to record 15 senior appearances. While his time at Carlton was brief—he later headed west to play for East Perth—his legacy is defined by his heroism during World War I. Enlisting at the mature age of 38, Pender was killed in action in France in 1916 while attempting to rescue his wounded officer from no-man's-land, cementing his place among the code's honoured fallen.
