Recruited from Maffra in Gippsland, Jim "Sam" Pleydell was a talented left-footed wingman who appeared destined for a long tenure at Princes Park after a breakout debut season. He capped off 1964 by winning Carlton's Best First Year Player award, impressing the faithful with his agility and poise. However, his progress was derailed early in 1965 when he sustained a severe broken jaw against Geelong, a setback that cost him significant playing time and shook his on-field confidence. By the time he recovered, he found himself squeezed out of a midfield that was rapidly developing into a premiership unit, with emerging stars like Garry Crane and Bryan Quirk cementing the wing positions. Pleydell departed the VFL at the end of 1967 and later revitalised his career in Tasmania, winning a best and fairest with Cooee in the NWFU.
