Bio
Recruited from the West Gippsland town of Garfield, Jim Pumphrey was a mid-sized utility who arrived at the Lake Oval for the 1962 VFL season. He broke into the South Melbourne senior lineup early in the year, making a successful debut in a 12-point victory over St Kilda at the Junction Oval in Round 2. Pumphrey managed to hold his place for a string of matches during the first half of the year, showing enough versatility to drift forward and register two career goals. However, he struggled to cement a permanent spot in the eighteen as the winter progressed, playing his final game in a heavy defeat to Carlton in Round 11. His tenure at the top level proved to be a single-season cameo, finishing with seven games for the Bloods before departing the VFL scene.
