Recruited from local club East Brighton, Jim Read had an unorthodox path to VFL football, having spent his childhood in Sydney playing rugby league before adopting Australian rules at age 15. A tough, hard-tackling winger known for his sharp left foot, Read became a fixture in the Saints' lineup during their ascent in the mid-1960s. His career is defined by the dramatic 1966 finals campaign; after losing his spot late in the season due to a knee complaint, he was recalled for the Preliminary Final following a career-ending injury to teammate Ross Oakley. Read seized the opportunity, holding his place for the Grand Final against Collingwood where his defensive accountability on the wing helped secure St Kilda’s solitary premiership, ensuring his legacy as a permanent member of the club’s most revered team.
