Bio
Recruited from Ringwood after growing up in Elwood, Jim Ross emerged as a standout performer for St Kilda during a lean post-war era. Playing primarily as a centre half-forward and ruckman, he was known for his incredible spring and marking ability, which allowed him to compete against larger opponents despite his lighter frame. Ross was a beacon of consistency and class in a struggling lineup, winning three Best and Fairest awards (1949, 1951, 1952) and topping the club's goalkicking in his final season.
Despite being in his prime at just 26 years of age, Ross left the VFL to accept a captain-coach role with North Launceston in Tasmania. He continued to excel across Bass Strait, earning All-Australian selection in 1958 and representing Tasmania on numerous occasions. His significant contribution at Moorabbin was later recognised with selection on the interchange bench in St Kilda's Team of the Century and induction into the club's Hall of Fame.
