Stats
Bio
Recruited from the Brunswick-Coburg Boys Club, Jim Russell was a local talent who served North Melbourne as a mid-sized defender during the mid-1950s. A serviceable backman who typically played on a flank or in the pocket, he spent his early years on the fringe of selection, battling to hold a regular spot in the senior lineup. After oscillating between the seconds and the firsts for three seasons, Russell enjoyed a career-best campaign in 1957, playing 15 games and briefly solidifying his place in the defensive rotation. He was unable to replicate that form the following year, however, adding just two more caps before his VFL career concluded. Tragically, Russell died in 1969 at the age of 37.
