Bio
Recruited from Corowa, Jim Sandral was a reluctant VFL recruit who famously prioritised his family farm over a long career in the city. A natural defender known for his uncompromising toughness and strong marking, he joined Melbourne during the club's golden era and was thrust into the spotlight during the 1956 finals series. Benefiting from an injury to teammate Geoff McGivern, Sandral was promoted to the starting lineup for the Grand Final, playing out of position on a half-forward flank to help the Demons secure the 'Olympic Premiership' in just his 15th game. He played only one more season before returning to the Riverina to manage the harvest, where he subsequently established himself as an all-time great of the Ovens & Murray Football League, winning three Morris Medals and earning elevation to Legend status.
