Bio
A solidly built rover recruited from Yallourn, Jim Shaw navigated a complicated path to league football that saw him trial with Carlton and remain tied to Geelong before Melbourne could finally secure his signature once the Cats' hold expired. He broke into the senior side midway through the 1949 season, kicking two goals in his three appearances and enjoying three consecutive victories. Shaw's VFL career was abruptly curtailed after he was omitted to the reserves, where he sustained a severe jaw fracture that ultimately forced his retirement from the top level. He eventually returned to the country and re-established himself as a star in the Central Gippsland Football League, winning the competition's best and fairest award, the Rodda Medal, in 1953.
