Recruited from Mooroopna in the Goulburn Valley, Jim Steigenberger was a strongly built utility who arrived at Fitzroy in 1934 after previously declining invitations to train with VFL clubs. His recruitment was significant enough that the Maroons played a courtesy match against a Goulburn Valley representative side to secure his signature, though he managed just three senior appearances at Brunswick Street before crossing to the VFA with Oakleigh. North Melbourne offered him a second chance at league level midway through the 1936 season, where he added nine games to his tally as a sturdy presence in the contest. Following his final VFL appearance in early 1937, Steigenberger departed to pursue captain-coaching roles in the country, finding immediate success with Balldale and later leading Brocklesby to a premiership, before finishing his playing days with Port Melbourne and Northcote in the VFA.
