Bio
Born at Coranderrk Station as the great-great-nephew of renowned leader William Barak, Jim Wandin holds a significant place in history as the first Indigenous player to represent St Kilda. Recruited from Healesville, he broke ground for the club in 1952, lining up as a centre half-forward during an era when Indigenous representation in the VFL was incredibly rare. His top-level career was cut short after just two seasons, with Wandin returning to the country due to homesickness and the culturally isolating environment of 1950s Melbourne. He went on to become a dominating figure in the Yarra Valley Football League as a captain-coach, but his true legacy extended far beyond football; he later succeeded his forebears as the Ngurungaeta (head man) of the Wurundjeri people, serving as a revered elder and custodian of his culture until his passing.
