Recruited from St Albans as a mature-age prospect with pick 17 in the 1989 National Draft, Jim West was a key forward who provided a reliable focal point for the Sydney Swans during a difficult era for the club. Making his debut at age 24, he operated as a traditional full-forward, relying on strong hands on the lead and accuracy in front of goal to convert opportunities in a struggling side. His most productive campaign arrived in 1991 when he booted 32 goals from just 14 games, highlighted by a career-best haul of seven majors against the Brisbane Bears. Despite boasting a healthy strike rate and averaging nearly 1.5 goals per game, West was unable to secure a long-term tenure at senior level and was delisted at the conclusion of the 1992 season.
