Bio
Selected by Geelong with pick 8 in the celebrated 2001 'Super Draft', Jimmy Bartel arrived at Kardinia Park alongside a generation of talent that would eventually break the club's 44-year premiership drought. While he initially established himself as a courageous flanker capable of fearless acts, he developed into one of the league's premier ball-winners. Renowned for his tactical versatility and elite overhead marking ability for a player of his size, Bartel became the prototype of the modern utility, equally effective winning clearances in the centre square or intercepting across half-back.
His reputation was forged in arguably the greatest era in Geelong's history. Bartel was widely regarded as a wet-weather specialist and a big-game player, accolades solidified by his standout performance in the 2011 Grand Final where he was awarded the Norm Smith Medal. This triumph complemented his 2007 Brownlow Medal, making him one of the few players in VFL/AFL history to possess a premiership medallion, a Brownlow, and a Norm Smith. Throughout the Cats' dominant dynasty, he provided the grit and defensive accountability that balanced the flair of his midfield teammates.
