Bio
The son of foundation Blue Jim Goonan, Jimmy Goonan arrived at Princes Park from VFA club Brunswick in 1922. A wingman who struggled to cement a regular senior berth, he managed just 22 games over six seasons but left a significant mark on the club's culture through his leadership in the lower grades. After failing to establish himself in the best 22, Goonan was appointed captain-coach of the reserves in 1925, where he found his true calling. He successfully steered the seconds to a remarkable hat-trick of premierships between 1926 and 1928, occasionally earning a senior recall during this dominant period. Goonan eventually departed to captain-coach Preston in the VFA, leaving behind a legacy defined more by his developmental influence than his on-field exploits at the highest level.
