Bio
Arriving at Essendon from Elsternwick as a teenager, Jimmy Gordon etched his name into club history with one of the most dramatic debuts on record. The clever rover and half-forward showed nerves of steel in his first senior appearance against University in 1913, kicking the match-winning goal after the final bell to seal a thrilling victory. Gordon proved to be a dangerous avenue to goal, booting 11 majors in just eight matches, but his football journey was tragically cut short by the First World War. After volunteering for service in 1915, he served as a bombardier on the Western Front before being killed in action at the Battle of St Quentin Canal in 1918, leaving the football world to wonder just how good the talented youngster could have become.
