Bio
Recruited from Richmond City, James "Jimmy" Ryan arrived at Victoria Park as the Magpies were establishing themselves as a powerhouse of the infant VFL competition. He was given a brief opportunity during the 1899 season, a year in which Collingwood topped the ladder and contested the Grand Final, making playing opportunities scarce for unproven recruits. Standing 173cm, Ryan managed only two senior appearances, serving as depth for a star-studded lineup that included the likes of Dick Condon and the Pannam brothers. Unable to retain his place in such a formidable side, his elite career was brief, ending after a singular season at the highest level.
