Bio
A clever wingman and rover recruited from Williamstown, Jock O'Brien played his junior football at Essendon before breaking into the senior VFL side in 1932. Renowned for his blistering pace, O'Brien was an accomplished professional sprinter who won the 1934 Heidelberg Gift, using that acceleration to evade opponents and compensate for his light, small frame. He made an immediate impression at Windy Hill, winning the club's Best First Year Player award, but his promising career was cut short after just three seasons when work commitments forced him to retire from League football. The elder brother of North Melbourne captain and best-and-fairest winner Dally O'Brien, Jock remained connected to the broader sporting landscape as a long-serving radio technician for the ABC.
