Bio
Recruited from local club Newtown & Chilwell, Joe Bailey was a diminutive utility whose VFL career was significantly curtailed by World War II. He made his debut for Geelong as a teenager in the 1941 season, managing just three senior appearances before his football ambitions were put on hold to serve as a corporal in the Australian Army. Bailey returned to Kardinia Park in 1946, re-joining a side rebuilding for the post-war era, and carved out a niche as a lightly built player who could rotate through the back pocket or the midfield. Standing at just 173cm, he relied on his agility and ground-level work rather than physical presence, adding modest numbers to his game tally over four subsequent seasons. While never a permanent fixture in the senior side, Bailey’s tenure at Geelong remains a respectful example of the many careers interrupted by military service during the 1940s.
