Bio
The son of former South Melbourne player Joe Garbutt, Joe Garbutt jnr arrived at St Kilda as a seasoned campaigner rather than a fresh-faced rookie. A long-serving stalwart for Port Melbourne in the VFA, he was already 31 years old when he made his VFL debut in 1935, a remarkably late start that spoke to his durability and persistence in the state league. Brought in to add experience to the Saints' defence, Garbutt provided a hardened body in the backline for a brief seven-game stint. While his time at the top level was fleeting, his selection as a mature-age recruit highlighted the Saints' search for immediate defensive stability during a challenging period for the club.
