Bio
Hailing from Ballarat East, Joe "Corker" Groves was a foundation player for Essendon who etched his name in history as a member of the league's inaugural premiership side. A clever and tactically astute winger, Groves was known for his ability to outthink opponents rather than simply relying on physical dominance, a trait that made him a consistent contributor during the club's early golden era. He was a key fixture in the 1897 team that claimed the first VFL flag under the unique round-robin finals system, helping the Same Olds establish immediate dominance in the new competition. After 57 games and four seasons at the top level, he departed the VFL at the end of 1900 to continue his football journey in the VFA with Footscray and North Melbourne.
