Bio
Recruited from Shepparton in the Goulburn Valley, Joe Hickey was a promising key forward whose VFL career was cut tragically short by family circumstances. After breaking into the senior side late in 1952 to feature in the Lions' Preliminary Final loss, Hickey quickly established himself as the club's attacking spearhead. He topped Fitzroy's goalkicking in 1953 with 40 majors, highlighted by a dominant eight-goal haul against North Melbourne at the Brunswick Street Oval. However, the sudden death of his father in a road accident in early 1954 forced the 25-year-old to walk away from League football to manage the family farm in Invergordon, leaving supporters to wonder what might have been as he returned to dominate local country leagues.
