Recruited from the nearby Carlton District club, Joe Hodgkins was a dangerous forward who made an immediate impact upon his arrival at Melbourne in 1908. He displayed a natural goal sense during his debut campaign, booting 11 goals in nine matches to establish himself as a genuine scoring threat early in his career. Hodgkins remained a regular contributor in the forward half throughout the 1909 season, but he struggled to retain his place in the senior lineup as the decade turned. He managed only three appearances across 1910 and 1911, eventually drifting out of the League with a respectable career record of almost a goal per game.
