Bio
Recruited from VFA side Northcote, Joe Holligan entered the VFL as a mature-age debutant, earning his chance with Geelong at 27 years of age during the 1913 season. He managed just two senior games for the Pivotonians, unable to hold down a permanent position in the side before his brief tenure at the top level concluded. While his footballing contributions were limited, his story is remembered for the tragic circumstances that followed shortly after his playing days ended. Employed as a shunter at the Geelong railway yards, Holligan was killed in a workplace accident when struck by a train in May 1915, passing away at just 29 years old.
