Bio
Hailing from the rural Victorian town of Laanecoorie, Joe Malone arrived at North Melbourne as part of the club’s post-war regeneration. His path to the VFL was delayed by World War II, during which he enlisted in the Australian Army and served in New Guinea, meaning he did not make his league debut until the age of 22 in 1946. Malone managed seven games in his first season and added another three in 1947, booting two career goals during his brief stint at Arden Street. While unable to cement a long-term position in the senior side, he remains part of the generation of footballers whose sporting primes were interrupted by their service to the country.
