Bio
Recruited from the Geelong Falcons with pick 22 in the 1995 National Draft, Joe McLaren was a versatile utility capable of playing on a wing, across half-forward, or in defence. He tasted early success as a member of St Kilda’s 1996 Ansett Cup winning side but found it difficult to break into the senior team during the club's 1997 Grand Final charge. His career best form arrived in 1999, where he played every game, hauled in over 100 marks, and finished seventh in the Trevor Barker Medal count. Unable to replicate that consistency the following year, he was traded to North Melbourne in a high-profile straight swap for premiership ruckman Matthew Capuano. Despite booting two goals on debut for the Kangaroos, McLaren could not secure a regular spot in the senior side, playing just 12 games in 2001 before spending his final season in the VFL.
