Bio
Arriving from Sunbury, Joe "Whippy" Oakley was a diminutive but solidly built rover and half-forward who stood just 157cm. Despite his lack of height, he managed to impact the scoreboard during his brief stint at senior level, booting a goal in each of his two VFL appearances against Hawthorn and Richmond in the 1934 season. Unable to secure a permanent place in the Essendon side, he spent the following years playing with the Melbourne seconds before eventually returning to his home club. Oakley later served in the Australian Army during World War II, seeing active duty in New Guinea with the 29/46th Infantry Battalion.
