Bio
A follower recruited from Albion United, Joe Paton proved his worth in Carlton's 1896 VFA campaign before transitioning with the club into the newly formed Victorian Football League. He secured his place in football history by taking the field in the Blues' inaugural VFL match against Fitzroy in Round 1, 1897, and held his spot for the first five consecutive games of the foundation season. Despite this promising start as a first-choice on-baller, Paton fell out of the senior rotation mid-year and did not add to his game tally before departing Princes Park. He continued his career with North Melbourne in the VFA the following season, leaving behind a legacy as one of the original pioneers who launched the league.
