Plucked from the Goulburn Valley after a standout season in country football, Joe Ritchie arrived at the Junction Oval with a reputation as a big-game performer. The Numurkah-born talent had caught the eye of St Kilda recruiters after being named best on ground in Drumanure's 1908 premiership victory over Muckatah, prompting an invitation to test his skills in the metropolitan league. Ritchie made his debut in the opening round of the 1909 season and held his place for the first seven weeks, showing promise as a forward option with a two-goal haul against Geelong in a narrow victory at Corio Oval. Despite this encouraging start, his VFL career was fleeting; he drifted out of the senior side by mid-year and eventually returned to rural life, leaving his seven-game stint as a brief footnote in the club's history.
