Teams

Recruited from the club's juniors, Joe Rouse was a lively rover who burst onto the VFL scene with a three-goal haul on debut against Carlton in 1900. After impressing initially and featuring in the club's mid-season touring party, he found it difficult to cement a regular spot in the starting eighteen, often being rotated into defence where his goal-kicking influence was nullified. Rouse managed just one senior game in his second season before transferring to Northcote, where his career quickly unravelled due to severe disciplinary problems. His football journey is largely remembered for its volatility, highlighted by a massive ten-year suspension in the VFA that extinguished the potential he had once shown as a young Magpie.
