Arriving at Princes Park from Seymour, Joe Sullivan established himself as a reliable focal point in attack during a challenging transition period for the Blues. He made an immediate impact by topping the club's goalkicking list in his debut 1900 season, a feat he repeated in 1901 and again in 1903. Operating as a key forward while Carlton struggled for consistency prior to the Jack Worrall revolution, Sullivan maintained a respectable strike rate of better than a goal a game throughout his tenure. After four seasons leading the line, he departed the VFL to continue his career with Northcote in the VFA, leaving a legacy as a consistent performer who carried the scoring burden for a developing side.
