Bio
Recruited from Cable Beach in the Kimberley region, Joel Hamling began his AFL journey with Geelong but spent three seasons on the list without making a senior appearance, unable to break into a backline boasting the likes of Matthew Scarlett and Harry Taylor. A lifeline from the Western Bulldogs as a delisted free agent proved career-defining, as he immediately cemented a spot in their defence and played a pivotal role in the club's drought-breaking 2016 premiership, famously nullifying Lance Franklin in the Grand Final.
Following the flag, Hamling requested a trade home to Fremantle, where he became a cornerstone of the Dockers' backline and a member of the leadership group. A disciplined, spoil-first key defender capable of locking down the opposition's best tall forward, his momentum was eventually halted by severe ankle injuries that restricted him to just six games between 2020 and 2023. Seeking greater opportunity late in his career, he moved to the Sydney Swans as an unrestricted free agent ahead of the 2024 season, brought in to provide veteran depth and structural insurance for their defensive unit.
