Teams

Recruited from Mt Gravatt in Queensland with pick 26 in the 2002 National Draft, Joel MacDonald faced the difficult task of breaking into a Brisbane Lions side at the peak of its triple-premiership powers. A versatile defender capable of matching up on both medium and small forwards, his early career was interrupted by significant injuries, including a knee reconstruction that erased his 2006 campaign. However, he eventually cemented his spot in the senior side, becoming a key component of the Lions' defence in 2008 and 2009 through his courage and ability to generate rebound from the back half.

Despite a strong 2009 season where he finished inside the top ten of the club's best and fairest, MacDonald was controversially delisted by Brisbane as part of a significant list overhaul under Michael Voss. He was immediately recruited by Melbourne with the first pick in the Pre-Season Draft, where the Demons sought to add mature bodies to a young, rebuilding squad. MacDonald brought leadership and stability to the Melbourne backline, eventually serving in the leadership group, before a persistent foot injury forced him to hang up the boots at the end of the 2013 season.
