Bio
Recruited from Yarrawonga with pick 5 in the 1994 National Draft, Joel Smith began his career as a highly rated prospect for St Kilda. He was a key component of the Saints' exciting young squad in the mid-1990s, but his time at the club ended in heartbreak and controversy. Late in the 1997 season, Smith ruptured his ACL, forcing him to miss the Saints' Grand Final appearance against Adelaide. A subsequent contract dispute saw him depart while still rehabilitating, eventually landing at Hawthorn with the second pick in the 1998 Pre-Season Draft.
After sitting out the entire 1998 season to recover, Smith reinvented himself at Hawthorn as one of the league's premier running defenders. His dash from half-back and ability to play on both small and tall forwards became integral to the Hawks' lineup, culminating in a Peter Crimmins Medal and All-Australian selection in 2001. He earned a second All-Australian blazer in 2003 and served as vice-captain, famously rejecting a lucrative offer from Collingwood to remain loyal to the Hawks during their difficult rebuilding phase. Smith retired at the end of 2007, stepping aside to open opportunities for the club's emerging list of young stars.
