Bio
Recruited from Shepparton via Melbourne High School Old Boys, John Ahern was a promising tall prospect who broke into the Melbourne side as a teenager during their 1989 pre-season premiership campaign. He made his senior debut in Round 1 that year, but chronic hip issues severely hampered his development, restricting him to just two VFL appearances as an undersized ruckman and key position player. Unable to get on the park throughout 1990, he was traded to North Melbourne in exchange for a late draft pick, but he failed to add to his game tally at Arden Street before being delisted. Ahern briefly attempted to revive his career with Port Adelaide in the SANFL, but his body ultimately forced an early retirement, after which he became a well-known publican in Melbourne.
