Bio
Recruited from the strong football nurseries of CBC Parade and Assumption College, John Bahen was a serviceable centreman and half-forward who played during a bleak era for Fitzroy in the 1960s. While the Lions struggled for success during his tenure, Bahen etched his name into club folklore as the starting centreman in the "Miracle Match" of 1963, helping a young and inexperienced Fitzroy side stage a massive upset against the eventual premiers, Geelong. He was a regular fixture in the seniors for six seasons but departed the VFL landscape relatively early at age 24, moving to the VFA to play with Port Melbourne. Post-football, he became a well-known figure in Melbourne’s hospitality scene, owning and operating several inner-city hotels including the Greyhound and the Imperial.
