Bio
A key defender who became a bona fide VFL legend, John Baird carved out a respectable AFL career at North Melbourne after originally being listed by Hawthorn. First overlooked for senior selection by the Hawks, he proved his big-game temperament by winning the Norm Goss Medal in Box Hill's historic 2001 premiership, prompting the Kangaroos to offer him a lifeline via the rookie list. Baird seized the opportunity, using his 192cm frame and disciplined checking to shut down opposition forwards, with his AFL career highlight coming in 2003 when he kept St Kilda superstar Nick Riewoldt goalless to earn a Brownlow vote. While he struggled to hold his spot in the senior side during his final two seasons, eventually being delisted in 2005, Baird’s legacy was cemented upon his return to the state league; he became an icon at Port Melbourne, captaining the Borough to their famous undefeated premiership campaign in 2011.
